The Layover

Posted by Mike Willis on Wednesday, August 13, 2008.
Vanessa and I currently are at the beach in North Carolina enjoying a little VACATION between our education and ministry in Dallas and our time of church planting training in Chicago.  Rest is a peculiar thing to us Americans ... I have always struggled with how to do it well ... and I sit here on vacation with a laptop!  Sheesh.

When I was in seminary in a preaching class, I heard a great sermon from a great guy named Paul Taylor.  He preached about Sabbath rest and he uncovered something for all of us (perhaps including the professor) that has had me changed ever since.  Sabbath rest is about trust ... as is fasting.  When we rest, we say to the world, "I align myself with God's rest after His creative work and I trust God with providing for me even though I don't work this day."  Rest allows our souls to settle, which can only occur as we further recognize our God's faithful and consistent provision.

Learning how to rest,
