Seek Christ in 2012

Posted by Mike Willis on Tuesday, January 03, 2012.
Sunday, I had the privilege of preaching Colossians 3:1-2 (thought I would make it through verse 4, but didn't, as has become a habit in this Colossians series). The imperatives are "Seek Christ" and "Set your mind on Christ". Neither would be commanded if any of us do them naturally. Seek doesn't mean, "Jesus, come out, come out wherever you are!..." It means, set your will on following Him, lift your life to Him since you are raised by Him. Our minds are not preset on Christ, though we sometimes assume so. Determine to seek Jesus and set your minds on Him. Here are some custom "resolutions" for 2012 for the Harvest North Raleigh family of faith:

Read the Bible and pray everyday in 2012. Place value. Pick a plan. Set a routine. I recently tweeted some Bible reading plans, we have several really good ones on the welcome table at Harvest, and you should check out www.youversion.com and pick a custom plan for you (leverage that phone in your pocket, download the app, and get this done!).
Give generously in 2012. Implement the 10/10/80 principle. Give the 10% first fruits of your income to Harvest. Tithe from your gross, otherwise, Uncle Sam gets your first fruits. Save 10%. Then operate from 80%. Set your mind to live on 80. If you need help getting your financial world in order, we have loving and trustworthy people who will help you for free.
Dive deeper into fellowship in 2012. Fellowship is where the Spirit really works. Where two or three are gathered for Jesus, He is with them (Matthew 18:20). Don't go it alone. Practice the 33 "one anothers" in the New Testament. Love one another, encourage, pray, confess sins to, bear burdens, serve one another...
Put sin to death in 2012. Seems like as every new year rolls around, there are several or many pesky things we've kept doing for yet another year. Don't give up and don't expect your feelings to get you over them. Set your mind. A mind not set is indecisive. Subdue sin. Remove temptation. You'll have plenty without welcoming more.
Get your relationships right in 2012. This is a common resolution for every human on the planet. God has life-giving instruction throughout His Word about healthy relationships, how He has designed us, and how to maximize our lives with one another. Relationships are the most important part of your life. Follow God in them.
Disciple your children in 2012. Deuteronomy 6 is an amazing picture of the conversation in the home being about the Lord, His works and His Word, gracious and authoritative in our lives. Let your kids see you leading and thinking from Scripture, praying and reading God's Word, talking about the Lord's goodness and grace and revering Him.
Get involved in a Harvest mission trip in 2012. Whether you go, give, or pray, get involved. God is gathering His own from every tongue, tribe, and nation and we are going to two of them this year. Get behind where the Lord is leading and enjoy fulfilling the great commission to make disciples of Jesus Christ in all nations.
